This “Triple Imperial Extension” camera was manufactured by “Thornton Pickard”.The “Thornton-Pickard” company was founded by John Edward Thornton and Edgar Pickard in Manchester, in 1888 and was based Altrincham near Manchester U.K. and was an early pioneer in the development of the camera industry including the innovative “Time & Instantaneous” shutter designed and patented by Thornton in 1892.The camera has a “Thornton Pickard” “Time & Inst. shutter, this appears to be working. The side of the camera has a applied ivorine plaque with “Thornton Pickard, Triple Imperial Extension”, the lettering is a little faded but still legible. The tapered black leather bellows have some small splits and holes to the corners and creases, as well as the usual marks and scuffs and loss of colour. The ground glass plate to the back of the camera measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches, I believe this is 1/2 plate size. There are no major splits or cracks to the mahogany that I can find, however, there are the scuffs and scratches that you associate with a used camera. The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina. All of the brass work appears to be present and is in working order, but has tarnished in places. The camera extends as it should and folds away smoothly, I have tried to show this in the photographs. We are not experts in cameras or there equipment so please ask for any information or additional photographs you require before bidding or purchasing. This camera requires some TLC in order to bring it back to its’ full glory and it would a great addition to any collection.

“Triple Imperial Extension”
Camera.

This “Triple Imperial Extension” camera was manufactured by “Thornton Pickard” and retailed by “Sands, Hunter & Co. Ltd.”

The “Thornton-Pickard” company was founded by John Edward Thornton and Edgar Pickard in Manchester, in 1888 and was based Altrincham near Manchester U.K. and was an early pioneer in the development of the camera industry including the innovative “Time & Instantaneous” shutter designed and patented by Thornton in 1892.

The camera has a “Thornton Pickard” “Time & Inst. shutter, this does not appear to be working, and a “Busch’s Rapid Symmetrical, F8” lens. The glass elements are free from fungus and the lens has retained much of its’ original lacquering and black paint finish, it also has its’ lens cap.

The side of the camera has a applied ivorine plaque with “Thornton Pickard, Triple Imperial Extension”, the lettering is still clear and legible.
The back of the camera has a retailers plaque with the “Sands, Hunter & Co. Ltd” details.
There are no holes or splits to the tapered black leather bellows, however, they do have the usual marks and scuffs.
The ground glass plate to the back of the camera measures 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches.

There are no major splits or cracks to the mahogany that I can find, however, there are the scuffs, chips and scratches that you associate with a used camera.
The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina.

All of the brass work appears to be present and is in working order, it has retained much of its’ original lacquering, but there are patches of tarnished in places.

The camera extends as it should and folds away smoothly, I have tried to show this in the photographs.
