This fabulous “Newman & Guardia” “New Special Sibyl” camera comes with its’ original makers case.”Newman & Guardia” were formed in 1891. Renown as makers of fine camera and other scientific equipment for a demanding clientele, they cease trading in 1956.There are no holes or splits to the black leather bellows, however, there is a little fading to the corners.The camera is fitted with a “Carl Zeiss Jena, Tessar,1:4.5, R12 cm D.R.P. 142294” lens, there are no chips or cracks to the glass elements, although they would benefit from a clean.The shutter appears to be working when the trigger is pressed.The camera opens well and slides in an out smoothly, the sliding lever to the front extends the camera as it should.The view finder moves in to place smoothly and the glass elements are intact with no chips or cracks.The alloy body is covered in Moroccan leather, and I can’t find any splits or tears to this, there is some ‘bubbling’ beneath the leather in places and there are the usual scuffs, marks and scratches you would expect from a well used item of this age. The tab is missing from the rear door and there is some discolouration around the missing piece.The black painted elements have retained much of their original finish.All of the white lettering and numbers have retained a good colour and are legible.The removable back detaches as it should, the ground glass plate measures 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.The folding leather hood is free from any damage and is held open by two folding sides.The leather handle is well attached and sturdy, the catch which release the front works well.The camera has its’ original leather case, this has the makers label to the inside of the lid.The handle is well attached and the stitching is in good order, although the leather has some surface cracking and missing finish in places.
