HOUGHTONS ENSIGN KLITO 1A FALLING PLATE BOX CAMERAThis is a Houghtons Ensign Klito 1A falling-plate magazine box camera, made around 1900 to 1904.  The box itself is made of leather-covered wood, in very good condition.  Unusually, I think, the exterior metal fittings are all of lacquered brass rather than black-painted.Twelve 8cm x 10.5cm plates are included, and the overall dimensions of the camera, with rack and pinion fully retracted, are: 22cm long, 17cm high, 10cm wide. The rack and pinion bellows focussing is fully functional and operated by the brass knob on the right-hand side of the camera.  The corresponding knob on the left is missing the only fault I have found, although it doesnt reduce the operation of the rack.I am unsure about the precise version of the camera. The number 1A is stamped on the brass plaque on the right side, but there are aperture and shutter speed controls, which I believe are more often seen on a Klito 2.The lens is a Beck Single Achromatic.  It is removable, presumably for cleaning or replacement, by sliding it out to the left once the retaining knob on the right has been unscrewed. All in all, this is an excellent example of this type of camera.  I cannot claim that it could be brought back into use, but it would make a fine display piece.
