Vintage (1972), In Excellent Condition, Fully Working  Yashica TL Electro X 35mm  Film Camera Body Only. Excellent Fully Working Condition.
The camera is a fairly conventional SLR pf the time, with modernappearance and a physical plan similar to the Pentax Spotmatic, but slightly larger. The shutter speed dial (with Yashica atom logo),film advance, shutter release, rewind knob and battery check are onthe top plate. The battery check is a red button and a green light, which will light up quite brightly if the battery is strong. Thebattery is inserted behind a small and easy-to-lose cap on the backof the camera, and two PC sockets are immediately to the right of it,wrapping onto the side of the camera: one is for FP sync (“FlatPeak” or, just as aptly, “Focal Plane,” forlong-burning bulbs that could expose at speeds above X-sync) and theother is for X-sync, as is the hot shoe.Thecamera is noticeably well-decorated, with a gothic “Y”monogram on the upper part of the pentaprism, “Yashica” inlarge letters above the lens mount, the camera name in black and redon the front, and a plastic Yashica atom logo on the leatherette.Thefilm door latch is separate from the rewind knob, and is covered byits own panel of faux-leatherette.Theself-timer is operated by the conventional lever, on the front of thecamera, and can be wound whether the camera is cocked or not. Unlikeon some cameras of this era, it does not have its own release button, and it cannot be released without cocking the shutter. The self-timerintervenes between the mirror raising and the shutter releasing, sothat the viewfinder blacks out and the aperture is stopped down whilethe timer runs.Immediatelyadjacent to the self-timer lever, on the side of the lens mount, isthe stopping-down lever, which stops down the aperture when pushedabout three-quarters of the way, and activates the meter when pushedfully. On the opposite side of the lens mount is the mirror lock-uplever. This is a knurled tab that can be flipped up with the lefthand to raise the mirror.Therewind-release button is on the bottom, as is the tripod socket.ShutterTheshutter is metal, a Copal Square-style vertical focal-planeshutter. The blinds are moved by exposed levers which give theshutter a somewhat primitive look. However, this shutter was one ofthe first truly modern shutters, with a design lineage reachingforwards to the last DSLR’s with physical shutters. The shutter ismechanically cocked and released, but speeds other than 1/1000th aredelayed by an electronic timer, giving stepless shutter speeds downto c. 2 seconds.Theselection of an intermediate shutter speed is largely guesswork.Speeds above 1/30th are click stopped, but it is possible to set thespeed dial between settings. The slower speeds are not click-stopped,reflecting Yashica’s intention for lower light exposures to bemetered by adjustment of the shutter speed rather than the lensaperture.MeteringThecamera is equipped with a TTL meter, which is operated by thestopping-down lever. In metering mode, the aperture is stopped downto the currently-selected aperture and the photographer can adjusteither shutter speed or aperture until the correct exposure isindicated; LED-lit red arrows in the viewfinder indicate over- andunder-exposure, and point towards the direction in which the lensaperture ring should be moved. Adjusting either the aperture ring orshutter speed dial until these go out indicates that the correctexposure has been set. The meter is in the pentaprism assembly anddoes not receive light when the mirror is locked up.
Thiscamera occupies a fairly unique niche in SLR history; many of itsfeatures were forward-looking and excellent for their time.Due to therobust nature of the metal shutter, that camera examples (as is theone for sale on my ebay) are more often than the others from that eraand price range, fully functional today. !!  BATTERIES !! Please Read Carefully Below Findingbatteries to replace the original 1.35V mercury batteries can bedifficult as there is no exact voltage match. One recommendation isto use two PX640A batteries, however, this results in a 0.3Vovercharge which can damage the circuitry of the camera and aninconsistent supply of voltage as alkaline batteries reduce overtime. One option which achieves the desired 2.7V is by using an MR -9 adaptor with two SR44 1.55V silver-oxide batteries[1]. The MR-9converts the voltage from 3.1V to the appropriate 2.7V and aconsistent voltage output is achieved by the SR44 batteriesThe camera is in excellent technical and visual condition.
