Offered is an uncommon Wirgin Gewirette, the later 1937 version, a compact camera with a telescoping lens that takes 127 roll film and makes 3×4 cm photos.

This camera has a Schneider-Kreuznach Radionar 50mm f2.9 lens with front cell focusing.  The focusing scale is in feet, so we believe this camera was built for export to the US market.  The shutter is a Compur with speeds of 1 sec thru 1/300 sec plus B and T.

The Gewirette’s design is nearly identical to the Adoxette, another German pocket-size 3×4 camera from the same era.

Condition:  Good plus overall.  The lens is fairly clear.  There are no cleaning marks nor signs of any fungus, but there is some haze on the inner surfaces (see the last listing photo).  Focus is stiff, but uniformly so throughout the full range of infinity to 3.5 feet.  The telescoping action works properly.

The shutter fires on all speeds.  Speeds of 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, and 1 sec all are the same at 1/10 sec.  Speeds of 1/25 thru 1/300 appear accurate to an experienced eye.

To load film, one removes the thumb screw on the back, turns the top knob in the direction of the arrow away from the “Z” (locked) position, and lifts off the entire top panel.  It helps to squeeze the top of the body with one hand while using fingernails to lift off the top – a very snug fit!

The viewfinder is clear.  Cosmetics are as seen in the photos:  Excellent leatherette, some discoloration on the ends of the satin metal parts, and some light corrosion on the accessory shoe.
