This is an Avus double extending folding plate camera of a type made by Voigtlander in Germany between 1913 and 1934. This camera is fitted with a Skopar lens in a rim-set Compur shutter and the serial numbers of both the lens and shutter suggest that this is a very late model dating from 1933. It is an extremely well made camera and is in excellent condition. Cosmetic Condition (to be read in conjunction with the photos)The leather on the body of the camera is in excellent condition with just one or two minor areas of browning through normal wear and tear see photos. The chromed parts including the hinges and the baseboard rails are in very good shape. The black painted surfaces show some paint loss around the frame to the viewing hood and at the front of the baseboard rails. The bellows appear original and are in excellent condition. The ground glass screen holder and viewing hood are also in excellent condition. The carry handle is original and complete. Operational ConditionThe folding mechanism works well. The camera extends well on its rails and locks into place on the infinity catch. The secondary extension of the bellows is smooth. The ground glass screen is unbroken and gives a clear image. The Compur shutter fires on all settings. Timing appears to be accurate but will need checking. The diaphragm works smoothly. The brilliant viewfinder is fully operational and gives a clear image but would benefit from a clean. The adjacent spirit level is undamaged and works as it should. The camera is fitted with a Voigtlander Anastigmat Skopar f/4.5 lens with a focal length of 105mm. The lens looks clean and does not appear to have any fungus. The bellows are light tight. The camera originally took plates or cut film in a 6.5 x 9cm format. Closed dimensions are 5 x 9.5 x 12.5cm and the camera weighs 680g. The camera comes with a single AP Paris plate holder which contains an original glass plate. It all comes in a superb felt lined Voigtlander leather case.
Overall, this is a very attractive well made camera in excellent condition. It has not been tested with film and as with any camera of this age it would benefit from a mechanical service and internal clean. I check all lenses for fungus as best I can, but do not guarantee that any lens is entirely fungus free. Whilst this lens appears to be clear, I recommend having the lens professionally cleaned if you intend to use this camera. I am an enthusiastic camera collector, but do not claim to have expert knowledge. Due to the age of this camera it is being sold as seen without warranty. The camera will be sent by 2nd Class Signed For post.
