Whilst the 1948 Polaroid Land Camera was the worlds first ‘instant’ camera, the Polaroid SX-70 has its own place in photographic history as the first folding SLR, whilst the SX-70 ‘SONAR’ became a milestone camera in its own right as the world’s first autofocus SLR (the 1977 Konica point and shoot camera just pipped it  as the worlds first autofocus camera). The technology is exactly the same as that used by ships to measure the depth of water (or submarines) underneath them.  A bit cumbersome on a camera perhaps – but ti works and it is extremely reliable. Designed by Henry Dreyfuss, examples of the SX-70 are to be found in design museums the world over.  As a user, the SX-70 became the darling of artists like Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams and many more. It continues to have a cult following in creative circles.

This one is serial No. 6E840028707 and it was made on May 3rd, 1978. Apart from testing, it has not been used and has been dry stored since new in its original packaging with the instructions and delivery documentation intact.  The original black leather covering and the metallic finish is almost unblemished – although I will declare some very light storage/packaging marks that do not show up in the photographs.  You have to look damn hard to see anything.

Inside the film housing there is no sign of use and the terminals are clean and in good condition.  I have run a dummy film pack through it to check that the motor, pick-up arm and ejection machinery is all working and taken a couple of shots with a new film to confirm that the auto-focus, aperture controls and shutter are doing what they should.

The styrofoam packaging is in good condition and still in one piece (very rare!) along with the original instruction book The display box is unfortunatelyaa bit ratty and the bottom is almost non existent.
This SX-70 Sonar is about as good as they get, and given its claim as a “first” of its type, they are currently highly undervalued. An original “minter” like this one has to be a good betAll in all – very nearly 10 out of 10 and good to use, display or keep for the grandchildren
