Whilst the 1948 Polaroid Land Camera was the worlds first ‘instant’ camera, the Polaroid SX-70 has its own place in photographic history as the first folding SLR. It was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, and examples are to be found in design museums the world over. The Model 1 was always Edwin Land’s favourite camera, and from a collector’s perspective, is the one to get. As a user, the SX-70 became the darling of artists like Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams and many more. It continues to have a cult following in creative circles. This one is serial No. C408972840 and was made on March 14, 1974. It has not been used much – if at all – and has been dry stored since new in its original packaging with the instructions and delivery documentation intact. The original tan leather covering is unmarked apart from a couple of tiny indentations on the top from storage. The metallic finish is also almost unblemished – although I will declare some very light scratching – from the packaging I think. These marks do not show up in the photographs and you have to look damn hard to see anything.Inside the film housing there is no real sign of use and the terminals are clean and in good condition. I have tested the camera with a new film and everything works as it should. The styrofoam packaging is like new and still in one piece (very rare!). The display box is also in good condition with only one very small tear in the top corner and a few faint splodges on the back.All in all – 9.5 out of 10 and good to use, display or keep for your grandchildren.
