This “Coronet” 1/2 plate camera was manufactured by “W. Buthcer & Sons” and is, I believe, their No. 1″ model. The British camera maker, formed by William Butcher in Blackheath London in 1887. Following the outbreak of WW1 they joined forces with “Houghton” (very nearby in High Holborn) in 1915 to form the “Houghton-Butcher Manufacturing Co. Ltd”. The two companies continued to sell their own brands until their full merging on 1 January 1926, this company became Ensign Ltd. in 1930.The front of the camera has an applied metal plaque with “The Coronet Camera” the lettering and background has a fair colour and is still legible. There are no holes to the tapered black leather bellows, however, there are the usual marks, discolouration and scuffs. There are also two small additional pieces of leather attached to either side of the bellows. The ground glass plate to the back of the camera measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches, I believe this is 1/2 plate size. There are no major splits or cracks to the mahogany that I can find, but, there are the usual scuffs and scratches that you associate with a used camera. The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina. All of the brass work appears to be present and is in working order, it has retained much of its’ original lacquer coating. It is fitted with a roller blind shutter, this does not work. The lens is missing. The camera extends as it should and it folds away smoothly, I have tried to show this in the photographs.
