I believe this camera is a Tropical Sanderson Hand and Stand. It is half plate size. It is finely made of teak as opposed to mahogany. The serial number 12497 gives it a date of around 1906 on the ‘Early Photography’ site.

Sometimes you see cameras posted on here that are just the usual mahogany bodied Sanderson that has had the fabric covering removed. This is not one of those.
This camera has been modified from its original form, yet I believe it would be a very worthwhile restoration project. It didn’t come with it’s original back and there have been a few fittings added to make a back from another camera fit.
The wooden parts that are present are in fairly good condition but the extending bed of the camera has been modified to accept a larger, longer lens at some time by making a circular depression into the middle of the board. A lot of the inside wood has been painted black. The lens board (and sadly the name badge) is missing. The locking mechanism from the front of the lensboard is missing. The catch to open the body of the camera can be stiff and will need adjusting. The rising front and swing mechanism work well, as expected from this excellent make. The bellows are is very good condition, although I cannot guarantee that they are light tight. There is no liquid in the round level.I’m no expert on vintage cameras. I have tried to be as accurate in my description as I can. I’m sure there are others who know more about these lovely Sandersons. Please feel free to contact me if you want to know more about the listing (more photos for example) or to give me more information if you feel I have made a mistake in the listing.Inspection welcome by appointment.

Please look carefully at the photographs, they form an important part of the listing.

I have also listed another folding half plate bellows camera.
