A Nikkormat FT3 classic 35mm SLR, with a Nikkor 43-86mm F/3.5 AI zoom lens and the original ever ready case and strap. The FT3 is the rare final version of the Nikkormat series. Although fully mechanical it uses AI aperture indexing rather than the older “rabbit ears” system so works with all AI and AI-S lenses. It runs from a standard modern 1.5V button battery rather than unobtainable Mercury cells.
It’s in working order and has a new mirror bumper and light seals. One of the strap lugs is missing but it’s easy to use it in the lower half of the case which has its own strap. Cosmetic condition is good commensurate with age, signs of moderate use include scuffing and light scratching to the bright metal including the baseplate, paint wear, a tiny dint to the edge of the prism housing and burring to the top edge of the nameplate, all visible in the pictures. The leatherette is fully attached. The screw in eyepiece is present.
The metal Copal Square shutter blades look undamaged, all speeds work and the slow speeds sound fine. The exposure metering is accurate and the needles aren’t jumpy. The focusing screen is bright and clear apart from a few dust specks, not distracting in use. Shutter speed is displayed correctly in the finder.The mirror is clean with a couple of faint marks. The flash terminal and hot shoe both work. The film advance, frame counter and rewind operate correctly, as do the self timer, mirror lock up and depth of field preview.
The lens is the late Nikkor AI version of the 43-86mm F/3.5 with the writing around the outside of the filter ring. It has a much better reputation than earlier versions of this zoom. It’s in good condition with external signs of light to moderate use. The filter thread is undamaged. Optics appear clean, and free of coating damage, haze and fungus, with some internal dust present. Focus and zoom actions are smooth and the 7 blade aperture is snappy and oil free. There’s minor cosmetic damage to the filter thread (not a dent) but it can easily take a 52mm skylight filter (supplied, not pictured).
With a Nikon lens cap and the original ever ready case in excellent condition – note that the camera with the 43-86 lens mounted fit into the case nicely.
