Thefirst reference Ive found to the R. O. C. View camera is in the1910 Canadian Kodak Co. Condensed Price List. The 1911 PREMO Catalogstates it is the most efficient and reliable view camera ever offeredto commercial photographers at such low prices. The front beingfirmly attached to the bed is extremely rigid and will accommodatethe heaviest lenses. Focusing from the back entirely by rack andpinion, it has vertical and horizontal swing, rising and fallingfront and reversible back. As most commercial photographers wouldalready have an assortment of lenses, the outfit includes just thecamera, case and plate holder. (See photo from 1911 Premo CatalogPage 30 for reference) An important point left off the listing isthat the R. O. C. View camera plate holders are adapted for use onlyin the R .O. C. View camera. The R. O. C. Plate Holders dontappear in the catalog until page 44. Note: George Eastman bought theRochester Optical and Camera Company that consisted of the RochesterOptical Co., Rochester Camera Co. and Monroe, Ray and Western CameraCompanies in 1903.
This6 1/2 X 8 1/2 (full plate) camera is in fine original conditionas pictured. The white I.D. tag reads R. O. C. View manufactured byEastman Kodak Co. successor to Rochester Optical Co. Rochester N. Ihad planned on trying to use this outfit with some of the new JasonLane dry plates that Ive heard good reports about but have toomany other projects with higher priority. As you can imagine R. O .C.plate holders are much rarer than the camera due to their uniquesize. Ive never found a reference to the size difference betweenthem and a Universal Double Plate Holder and cant remember seeingspecifically named R. O. C. View plate holders listed on eBay.Fortunately Im an engineer and had one of the largest privatevintage Eastman Kodak collections and my youngest brother is a finecarpenter. I carefully measured the dimensions of the R. O. C. Viewcamera spring back adjuster, laid them out on three matching fullplate double plate holders and determined the conversion would work. Both sides of the plate holders were reduced symmetrically so theplate holders would align correctly in the camera back. The edgeswere refinished and hard tell they were modified. Even better if youare considering using the camera, all three of the double plateholders have removable 5 X 7 plate/film adapters alreadyinstalled. The bottom wood strip of the plate holders is springloaded. By sliding the two metal tabs up on both sides on the top ofthe plate holder and then pushing down on the bottom of the adapter, the adapters slide out from the top. Simply reverse the process toinstall the adapters. All three plate holders match physically andare complete with dark slides. The red septum on one is marked ForSeneca For Century Pat. June 22, 1909 SIMPLEX Pat. Applied For.
Greatrare collectible for the early U. S. or Eastman Kodak view cameracollector and/or photographer using or planning to use cut film/dryplates. They dont come much nicer and this one has been in mycollection for years. Shipping cost will be based on packaged size, weight, location, method and required insurance.
