The SX 70 was designed by Henry Dreyfus and examples of its revolutionary design can be found in design museums the world over. It quickly took the fancy of artists such as Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol and David Hockney and was used extensively by fashion/glamour photographers like Helmut Newton. Its potential continues to establish the SX-70 as a cult imaging tool.
This one has a serial number of F410361840, confirming its birthday as June 14th, 1974. It is the second version of the “Mark 1” with a split-image focussing screen. This model also has real leather panel inserts, unlike the tacky plastic on later versions.
This example has had very little use and had just been pulled out of storage where it has been kept safe and dry since I bought it in Germany more than 20 years ago. It looks like new and has only the very slightest suggestion of case rubbing on the metallic finish and some tiny depressions in the leather. None of this shows on the photo’s. There are no dings or scratches. The optics on the lens and viewfinder are excellent. The rollers have been cleaned of any sticky film debris and there is no corrosion on the terminals inside the film loading space. I’ve run a dummy pack of film through to confirm that the motor, pick up arm and ejection mechanisms are all working properly, and taken a couple of shots with some new film to check that the shutter, focus and exposure controls are operating as they should. The bellows and the folding viewfinder shutters are in excellent condition with no creases or light leaks.
The camera comes complete it’s – slightly aged – original box, styrofoam packaging and instructions (these are in German but are mostly in pictures and anyway easy to find with Google).
