Having been instructed by an executor to clear a bungalow due to the demise of its owner, we obliged and rapidly concluded the job. Three days after the clearance was completed, I was telephoned by a lady, a close neighbour and colleague of the deceased. She explained briefly that she had been a beneficiary of her friends will and that she had some ‘trinkets’ of her own to dispose of and quite a lot of other ‘bits’ that her neighbour had “lovingly” bestowed upon her. She stated that none of the items were of any use to her but she understood from her benefactor, whilst she was still alive, that some of the items were extremely rare and by their very nature quite valuable. It would appear that her colleague’s husband, prior to his demise, had been a collector of rare, ancient and modern coins and something of an expert in all manner of antiquated writing equipment. All the items offered to me, with the exception of several sovereigns, (these she wished to keep), could, she said, be disposed of. I viewed the goods of which there were many, I spent an inordinate amount of money, we both had several small sherries to seal the deal and parted jolly good friends……what an extremely delightful person!
This item, including its leather case, is in exceptionally good condition. According to my client it had belonged to her father and she could not recall it ever having been used. When I mentioned that it had obvious indications about it that it had been used, she started to ‘fall out with me’……I said no more. Obviously she wasn’t around when it was being used!….families are a no-no subject and I steer well away whenever possible. The Kodak is in superb condition nevertheless.
