I think it’s safe to say that if — after checking out all my listings this week — you can’t find anything that interests you, you either aren’t really looking, or there’s nothing in the world that you find interesting anymore. I’ve put together an excellent and diverse assortment of mechanical, technological and musical antiques, and regardless of how eclectic your tastes might be, I think you’ll find something you like.
Here’s an outstanding antique camera outfit that includes an 1880’s Scovill 5 x 8 tailboard camera (with its original plate holder, lens and carrying case), a folding Eastman tripod, a box of Eastman developing chemcals, a Burke & James focusing cloth and a pair of early print developing trays. Everything except the tripod and darkroom supplies can be stowed in the original Scovill wood case, which measures just 10″ x 12″ x 8″ when closed. The lightweight, portable tripod (approx. 3 lb.) collapses down to just 29″ when not in use.
Condition of the camera itself is excellent to near mint throughout. The mahogany body retains its original finish, as does the cherry bed. The finish is beautiful, just the tone you want to see on an antique mahogany camera. All of the brass fittings are original and in excellent condition, and no fittings are missing. The camera opens easily, closes easily, and stays rigid when the bed is locked in place. As you can see, it looks great from any angle and even better when mounted on the tripod.
Camera retains its original lens board, its original Waterbury lens, and its original ground glass focusing plate. No misfolds in the bellows, which are original, but still crisp and glossy black. Lens element is in excellent condition, ground glass is perfect, with no scratches or damage. Lens throws a crisp image against the ground glass back with sufficient lighting. Original double-slide Scovill plate holder is in excellent condition.
Tripod is good condition and original throughout, including the mounting screw and the leather retaining straps. Original finish on the legs, with scattered marks in the finish consistent with age and normal handling. All three spikes are still present on the ends of the legs.
That’s about it. I will pack everything carefully and properly. Auction participants with no prior feedback history or with hidden feedback should contact me before placing a bid. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
