MACKENSTEIN FRENCH 19THC MAHOGANY TRAVEL CAMERA WITH LENSThis is a superb example of a Mackenstein: one of the leading 19th century French camera makers.  The camera is made of polished mahogany with an abundance of brass fittings, all in very good condition.  It is quite large for a travel camera (a design used in France and Germany but not GB), supporting 15x21cm plates.  Four double-dark slides come with the camera.  These look to be made of walnut (frequently used in France).  There is no makers label on the camera, although it has an id number (11792), perhaps the late 1880s.  It is clearly, to me, a Serie III C Field Camera (tailboard), illustrated on the Collectiblend website. The camera is capable of stereo use, with provision for a septum (not included) and a wide-travel lens board. The lens is a Degen Wide-Angle No. 3E, with a rotating aperture control. The diagonal-cornered bellows is red leather, in very good condition. The mahogany employs dovetailed joints and it is worth noting that the fold-down base is locked and unlocked using the brass knob at the bottom of the front standard.  This is a beautifully made camera in excellent condition.  It would make a very fine display piece and could possibly be brought back into use by a plate camera enthusiast.
