Manageable Projects & Hard-To-Find Parts. You’ll find an excellent assortment of both this week at my quarterly “garage sale,” so make sure to check out all of my auctions after you look at this one.
Here’s a nice early Petzval type lens for use with either a wet or dry plate camera. Don’t know the exact focal length, but it came with a bunch of parts and plate holders for a large format camera, so I’m guessing that it can cover an 8″ x 10″ plate.
Dates to around 1860-70, but it’s unsigned (at least I can’t find a maker’s mark anywhere).
Has a Waterhouse slot and 3 stops, so it’s a true camera lens, not a magic lantern lens.
Nice lacquered brass barrel with no dents or damage. Has a brass cover for the lens and a really nice mahogany shade that matches the lens board. Rack and pinion focusing functioning okay. Lens elements are clear, and there’s no glass damage. I see a few dust mites and specks visible inside, but they shouldn’t affect the image quality.
With the rack extended, it measures 6 1/4″ from the flange to the end of the hood. Hood is approximately 3 1/4″ diameter.
The Leica pictured in the last photo is of course not included with the lens. It’s pictured for scale, to give you a better idea of the lens’s size.
