For sale is a Lancaster Le Merveilleux hole plate camera.
This camera is mentioned in the book “British camera makers” by Norman Channimg & Mike Dunn that plus online sources seem to confirm it is an early version of Le Merveilleux from between 1882 and 1886. Plenty of the the more sophisticated post-1886 versions seem to come up in online searches but hardly any of the pre-1886 models. Lancaster were still selling wetplate slides for this kind of camera so in a sense it is a transitional camera, when the switch to dryplate was well under way. by 1886 it was a semi-obsolete design. This camera seems to have been built to a budget and the bellows how this, they are made from 2 layers of cotton with a layer of of newspaper in between. The Daily News, job adverts mostly! The lens ring is 2″ a two element petzval or something like that would suit – no too heavy!
Overall Condition: GoodFully Functioning: Yes
Body:Fully intact.Scratches: Signs of use, some surface marks and general ware.Brassing: Bass fittings all present, obvious signs of use.
