One of the first and most successful compact cameras, the Vest Pocket Kodak camera appeared 107 years ago, in April 1912. Advertised as The Soldiers Kodak it was one of the most popular and successful cameras of its day. Over 2 million were sold before the model was discontinued in 1926.
The 1913 Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic is an original “compact” camera advertised as “The Soldier’s camera” during WWI. It was manufactured by Kodak from 1913 to 1926. One of the most significant features was the “autographic” window on the camera back a feature invented by Henry J. Gaisman. By sliding a small door open, the photographer was able to inscribe some information about the picture through the backing paper, directly onto the film using a metal stylus a distant ancestor to today’s “day / date” modes in some electronic cameras.
