This is an Exa 500 SLR camera made by Ihagee in Dresden around 1966. The Exa series of cameras was the less expensive version of the famous Exakta series and continued to be made long after Ihagee was taken over by VEB Pentacon. This is the last in the Exa line and features shutter speeds up to 1/500th sec and an instant return mirror. The camera is in near mint condition and is in good working order.

Cosmetic condition (to be read in conjunction with the photographs)

The leather on the body of the camera is in near mint condition with no leather missing and hardly any signs of wear and tear. The satin chrome finishes are also excellent throughout with just a light scratch on the base plate – see photo. The interior of the camera is also in excellent condition.

Operational Condition

This camera appears to be in good working order. The viewfinder is clear and the camera focusses well. The horizontal focal plane shutter fires on all settings, although it feels sluggish on the slowest settings. The timing will need to be checked if you intend to use this camera. The shutter curtains are in mint condition. The aperture opens and closes smoothly. The lens is a Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Domiplan f/2.8 with a focal length of 50mm. It is an interchangeable lens with an Exakta mount which is in excellent condition. The lens is clear and appears to be free from fungus. The back of the camera slides off easily on releasing the locking catch. The camera takes 35mm film. Dimensions of the camera with the lens in place are 8 x 10 x 13cm and the camera weighs 800g.

Overall, this is a very nice example of this well made German camera. It has not been tested with film and as with any camera of this age it would probably benefit from a general mechanical service if you intend to use it. I check all lenses for fungus as best I can, but do not guarantee that any lens is entirely fungus free. Although this lens appears to be clear, I recommend having the lens professionally cleaned if you intend to use this camera.

Due to the age of this camera it is being sold as seen without warranty.
