This is a Diax IIa rangefinder camera made by Diax Kamerawerk in Ulm Germany between 1954 and 1956. The Diax company was founded by Walter Voss in 1947 and produced high quality cameras for just 10 years, the company closing down in 1957. This camera features a coupled rangefinder with a separate viewfinder for the telephoto lens and is one of very few cameras with three windows on the front of the top plate. This particular camera, serial number 85262, is in excellent cosmetic condition and has been the subject of a full CLA service. There is an excellent review on the full Diax range of cameras at CJ’s Classic Camera Collection: http://www.cjs-classic-cameras.co.uk/other/diax.html. Cosmetic condition (to be read in conjunction with the photographs)The body of the camera is in excellent condition. The leatherette casing is unmarked with no scuffs or tears of areas of lifting leather. The logo and wording on the rear of the camera is fully legible. The satin chrome top and bottom plates are also unmarked. The lens barrel is excellent. The only defect I can find is some very minor paint loss on the shutter assembly where it is affixed to the camera – see photos. The interior of the camera is in excellent condition. Operational ConditionThe camera has been the subject of a full CLA service during which the shutter was serviced, the rangefinder cleaned and adjusted and the lens cleaned of some light haze. The camera is in excellent working order. It features an interchangeable Schneider Kreuznach Xenar f/2.8 lens in a Synchro Compur shutter. The lens mounting system is unusual – a fixed male thread ring on the front of the shutter and a female screw thread on the rear of the lenses. The camera takes 35mm film. This is a small but heavy camera: dimensions with the lens attached are 11.5 x 7.5 x 7cm and the camera weighs 710g.
The camera comes in its original Diax leather case which is in very good vintage condition. Overall, this is a lovely example of this well made German camera – very rare in the UK.
This camera has not been tested with film. Due to the age of this camera it is being sold as seen without warranty.  Buyers outside the UK.  I use eBay’s Global Shipping Service to send items outside the UK. eBay will not combine shipping costs on these items, so if you are interested in more than one item, please contact me before buying.
