Here is an Antique example of J Lancaster& Sons Mahogany and brass bound Tailboard Camera. The specialInstantograph patent folding half plate. James Lancaster were a Birmingham-based firm of opticians and maker ofcameras and lenses, established in 1835. Later becoming J Lancaster & Sons, then it became JLancaster & Son Limited in 1910. It has one ivorine plaque with Thespecial Instantograph patent, it is missing another plaque. The hinges to the rear are also engraved withthe Lancasters patent, the viewing glass plate has a framed area whichmeasures 4 by 3 which I assume is quarter plate, the lens has J Lancaster& Son fil patent, Birmingham Rectigraph. This camera dates between 1892to 1910. Designed to meet the request of amateurs who have requested ahigh-class camera with brass bound, double swing and a folding tail-boardclosing over and protecting the focusing glass when carried. Like the otherinstantograph camera this version was compact and lightweight. The camera wasconstructed of select mahogany with brass bounded corners for strength andaccuracy in alignment. It has rising front, double swing back, and a doubleextension patent bellows that are square and tapered. The bellows are in good order and appear tohave no holes, lens is also good with no scratches and is fully functioning.Please check the many images for bestdescription.
