19TH CENTURY ENGLISH MAHOGANY AND BRASS FIELD CAMERA PLUS LENSThis half-plate camera is by George Hill of Birmingham, probably made in the late 1880s It is well made with dovetail joints, with a distinctive design.Both the mahogany and the brass are in good condition (most of the brass has been cleaned and re-lacquered). The square-cornered tapering bellows are in excellent condition I can see no pinholes.All movements work as intended rack and pinion focussing acting on the bed and moving the front standard, rise and fall on the lens board, swing and a degree of tilt on the rear standard. The rear standard is locked on the base-board via two vertical through bolts. The lens is Swiss, made by Suter, and is an Aplanat B No. 3, id number 5834. The lens is clean and has a slot for Waterhouse Stops, although no stops are available. A Thornton-Pickard Time & Inst shutter is fitted to the lens board. It is complete and works, but the timings have to be doubtful.The camera folds well, although there is no screw at the top of the rear standard for the catch. There are two sliding shutters in the base board, one of them a bit stiff, to ensure that the base is flat for use. The camera comes with two double dark slides (plate size approx 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches).The camera is very clean, beautifully presented, and would make a very fine display piece. An enthusiast could probably bring it back into use with a bit of effort.
