1930 LEICA IA #36080 with rare German DEALER PLATE + 3.5cm ELMAR, CASE, 2 CASSETTES, 1929 BROCHURE

– 1930 BRASS DEALER PLATE inscribed “WILLEMER & PRAUSE, COBURG”, 3/4″ diameter

Overall, a very original early Leitz outfit. The dealer plate is very unusualquite possibly unique, I have never seen anotherand is a real plus. The camera came out of England, and may well have left Germany at the end of WW2, in the hands of a serviceman, as many did.
The earliest Leica dealers were allowed by Leica to add their business names to the Leica equipment they sold. All these inscriptions are very collectible. It puts the camera into the same category as Leicas engraved with Tiranty in Paris (“S-T”, Specialit Tiranty), “N-L” for Odin, Netherlands, and Lutz Ferrando in South America, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. (There’s also “Mont en Saar”, for postwar Leicas which were built in France to avoid import taxes.)
ConditionLEICA IA # 36080. Body paint is original Leitz, with wear mainly on the edges and the base. Vulcanite is perfect, deep black, dimly attached, correct pattern, no visible repairs or wear. Nickel fittings show mainly edge wear. Shutter speeds sound accurate, wind on is smooth, viewfinder very clear. Have not checked the blinds or run film in the camera. WILLEMER & PRAUSE, COBURG fotohaus plate is very attractively designed with a fun early logo. Moreover – amazingly! – the company is still in business!
ELMAR 5cm, f/3.5, meters, too early for serial #, most likely original to this camera body. Glass looks clean, no marks on exterior, but have not demounted the lens to view from the inside. Lens barrel is brassed, focus is smooth, diaphragm just a little heavy but perfectly useable. With original Bakelite Leitz lens cap, fits well, no cracks, perfect condition.
ORIGINAL LEITZ ETRIN OUTFIT CASE (with Leitz/Leica logos impressed) in very good condition overall, top has been restitched. Rangefinder holder bottom support is loose. Dual cassette holder is original Leitz, with two cassettes, no Leitz logos on cassettes themselves, howvwe, they may simply be too early.
1929 LEITZ “HINTS” Brochure/ Instruction Book, in English, is in nice shape, complete and original, from an edition of 5,000 printed in May 1929.Mark top right on front cover, but otherwise complete and in very nice shape.
ValueCollectiblend values the 5-digit Leica Ia with lens in Very Good condition at $1,100 – $1,200. “S-T” and “Tiranty” engraved Leicas are worth about $1,400 – $2,000 in Very Good condition.
