Here’s an excellent antique camera outfit that includes a pocket-sized Shew aluminum bound folding “strut” camera manufactured in London at the turn of the last century. The camera comes with its original Dallmeyer lens, its original leather lens cover, its original leather carrying case, and all 6 of its original glass plate holders. Everything can be stowed in the case, which measures just 7″ x 8″ x 4″ when closed.
Condition is excellent throughout. The leather bellows are original and light tight, the Dallmeyer lens is clear, the iris aperture can be easily adjusted, the patented Shew focusing lever moves smoothly and adjusts the distance between the lens and the plates precisely, and the Bausch & Lomb shutter still works. Plate holders slide easily in and out of the camera back. Ground glass focusing pane in the back of the camera is original and undamaged. The aluminum fittings are original throughout, and they’re all clean and undamaged.
The camera opens easily, closes easily, and stays rigid when the front standard is locked in place on the struts. As you can see, it looks great from any angle.
Original Shew & Co. leather carrying case is in excellent condition, befitting the camera it houses, with a sturdy handle, clean original green felt lining, a working latch, and no damage. Hard to find a 120-year-old leather camera case in condition that’s this nice.
Overall, a beautiful and very collectible British plate camera outfit whose condition is truly exceptional.
