Small is beautiful.
Volkswagen sold us on that idea back in the 1960’s, and if you check out all of my listings this week, I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that I can make a compelling case for it again in 2019.
Here’s a Hermagis folding glass plate camera manufactured in Paris in the early 1890’s. Though it measures just 9″ x 7″ x 4″ when closed, this is a half-plate camera whose image size is 5″ x 7″.
As you can see in the photographs, the camera is in good condition overall, and it includes its original lens board and its original iris aperture lens. The red leather bellows are original to the camera, and they appear to be light tight. The mahogany body retains its original French polished finish, with very little wear evident, just a single chip on the left side where the bed folds into the body (see pictures). The tongue in groove joints are tight everywhere, with no swelling,
The lens is clear, with no damage and no fungus, just a few scattered dust specks between the elements. The aperture adjustment is working properly, and the lens throws a crisp image against the ground glass back. There are no dents in the brass, although the hood appears to have been resoldered to the top of the barrel. The bubble level on top has fluid, and it works. The swing level on the side of the camera also works. Focusing glass on the camera’s back is original and undamaged.
I’ll include a double-slide plate holder that’s been modified to fit the camera, but the camera has never been used for anything other than display, so no warranties are being made with respect to its suitability for photography.
