Here’s a pristine 1888 Scovill Waterbury 4 x 5 Detective Camera in its original cardboard box.  Like the Tisdell & Whittelsey Camera of the same era, the well made, thoughtfully engineered Waterbury Detective was built to a standard rather than a price. The camera is original throughout, including the lens, the ground glass focusing plate and the carrying strap. Even the shutter-cocking string is original, and it’s still functional.
Oak body is clad in high quality Moroccan leather, and the leather is about as clean as you’ll find on any camera of this vintage. Signs of light wear and gentle handling, but no evidence of neglect or abuse. Lens elements are clear; aperture slide can be manipulated easily, focusing mechanism is working properly. Brass hardware is original throughout, with a beautiful patina and no corrosion. Undamaged original ground glass, undamaged glass viewfinder with an undamaged mirror. Both bubble levels are undamaged and filled with fluid, and both are working. Wood joints are all tight; everything is pristine.Cardboard box is in good condition, with normal signs of age, but no missing panels, no problems. Tops of three interior corners have old tape on them. Paper on box in front is original and in excellent condition. Box is sturdy can can still be used to the store the camera.
Camera measures approximately 7″ wide x 6″ high x 7″ deep.
When you’ve finished checking out my ebay listings this week, take a look at my TechnoGallerie website, where you can buy hard-to-find antique phonographs, antique radios, antique cameras and other gadgets you’re not likely to see anywhere else.  New arrivals this week include an excellent and historic 1900 Eldridge R. Johnson Type C “Victor” phonograph (complete and correct) and an 1894 Photoret pocket watch camera in its original slide-top wood box.  Just type TechnoGallerie in the address line of your web browser and hit the enter key. TechnoGallerie has a newsletter, too, and if you take a second to sign up for it, you’ll receive an email update whenever I list something new on the site — typically once a week.
That’s about it.  I will pack it carefully and properly.   Auction participants with no prior feedback history should also contact me before placing a bid.  Buyer prepays and includes shipping.  Paypal okay.
